Cancelling a contract or subscription in Quebec: gym, digital services, telecom and recurring charges

A practical path to cancel a subscription, check fees, preserve proof and react when charges continue after cancellation.

Before cancelling

  • Contract start date and term.
  • Automatic renewal or indefinite term.
  • Required cancellation method.
  • Cancellation fee or device/equipment balance.
  • Discounts tied to other services.
  • Equipment-return deadline.

Gyms and personal services

Quebec rules differ by contract category. Use the Office de la protection du consommateur page that matches the service rather than relying only on the merchant's terms.

Mobile, Internet and TV

Atlas already has a detailed French guide on number portability, equipment returns and final bills. Use it before closing a line:

Digital subscriptions and trials

Check where you subscribed: directly with the service, App Store, Google Play or another platform. Cancellation often has to be completed with the entity that actually bills you.

Keep written proof

Save the confirmation email, cancellation-page screenshot, confirmation number and equipment-return receipt.

Charges continue

  1. Contact the merchant with proof of cancellation.
  2. Request a correction and keep the case number.
  3. If billing continues, check dispute options with the financial institution or card issuer.
  4. See Disputing a purchase or charge.
