Joining SOS-POP: monitoring birds at risk through the correct platform
Obtain sites and protocols, report presence and absence and protect sensitive locations.
An eBird observation is not automatically imported into SOS-POP.
Register for an area
Indicate interest through the participation form. Request the kit and sites for an area where you can realistically conduct monitoring. [2]
Follow the assigned protocol
Use instructions for the species and sites. Protocol-based absences matter too; distinguish a visit without detection from a visit that never occurred. [1]
Submit to the correct platform
Use the SOS-POP form for this monitoring. Respect sensitive-location confidentiality instructions; the program is no longer available as an iNaturalist project. [1]
Distinguish monitoring from emergencies
For an immediate threat to a bird or nest, consult authority-reporting procedures. Protect your safety and avoid confrontation; a survey does not replace that process. [3]
